TEACHING GRAMMAR STRATEGIES
There are many strategies in teaching Grammar. Among them EGRA/U, TRP, PPP. The strategies are explained one by one in the following.
EGRA/U
EGRA/U stands for Experience Generalization Reinforcement Application/Use. This strategy is used when the teacher introduces new tenses to the students. Here, the students are given exposure with some examples of the use of the tenses in context, it can be in a written or oral form. By having experiences in the use of the tenses in context, it is expected that the students can get the understanding of the tenses.
Experience
Experience is the time for the teacher to give the students exposure about the use of the grammar.
For example: The teacher gives so many sentences which use the grammar in context.
In teaching Simple Present, the teacher presents some sentences:
- She studies English everyday
- He studies English everyday
- They study English everyday
- I study English everyday
- You study English everyday
- We study English everyday
- The train leaves for Surabaya at 7
Generalization
While giving the students these examples, the teacher asks them to analyze the pattern. In guiding the students generalize the pattern, the teacher can ask 2 or 3 students to come to the board and write down the pattern. The others are asked to check the pattern.
Reinforcement
This phase, the teacher gives reinforcement to the students in the form of exercises from the book they have. Correction is done every time the students make mistakes.
Application/Use
This phase, the teacher give chances to the students to apply or use the tense in a real use. For example by conducting a game as the activity in the classroom or other activity which is meaningful. For example in using simple tense, the students are asked to tell their daily routines.
TRP
er
TRP stands for Test Reinforcement Practice. This strategy is used when we think that the students have already been taught the tenses. Therefore, it is not necessary for the teacher to teach them from the beginning. The stages are explained in the following.
Test
The teacher directly gives the students a test on the tense she/he is going to teach. Here, the teacher should be sure that the students have already learned the tense before. For example simple present tense for Senior High School students. The test should cover all the pattern may appear in the tense.
Reinforcement
After collecting all of the result of the test, the teacher asks the students to exchange their work to their peer. After that, the teacher is going to discuss in the class. At this time, the teacher guides the students to check their peer's work. The reinforcement of the tense is done while the teacher gives the students turn to answer the questions of the test for the students.
Practice
This phase, it is the turn for the game or other meaningful activities in the classroom which use the tense. For example interview, filling gaps or some other activities which encourage the students to use the tense in doing the task.
